A home can receive no higher accolade than to be highlighted in a beautiful coffee-table book. Noted author and interior designer Betty Lou Phillips devoted an entire chapter to Champ d'Or in her book Unmistakably French, weaving elegant prose about the history and beauty of Paris among spectacular photographs of this Texas estate. The beautifully written text about Paris is of a piece with the photos of Champ d'Or. They were made to go together.
Descriptive paragraphs under the photographs of Champ d'Or explain each room's historic context. For example, for a photo of the tea room with views of surrounding gardens, she writes:
"Today, tea parties are not just childish pleasures, especially when a home has a tearoom of its own. During the reign of Louis XIV, tea became a fashionable beverage when the king began drinking steaming cups for digestive reasons. Nowadays, most every Parisian has a favorite tearoom as a preferred place to meet, devour fancy Patisseries, and gossip. . . An array of four different colored crystal chandeliers (two unseen) hang in the room."
Betty Lou Phillips is the author of award-winning Villa Décor, plus French Influences, French by Design, and Provencal Interiors: French Country Style in America. Her own design work has appeared in Southern Accents, Traditional Home, Bedroom & Bath, and has graced many magazine covers. She has also appeared on the Christopher Lowell Show and the Oprah Winfrey Show. Ms. Phillips lives in Dallas, Texas.
